The beta is officially over.

Beta Ends with a Bang

FASA kept their promise, the beta did end with a bang. At 8:00 p.m. EDT the Shadowrun beta ended — several hours earlier than anticipated, sending waves of confusion through the IRC chat FASA had scheduled.

After the initial shock died down, FASA members continued the festivities by taking more questions from the community. A write-up with a list of announcements made during the IRC chat will be available later.

I must say that this has been the best beta I’ve been a part of. It’s sad to see it end, but it was really fun while it lasted. FASA Studios maintains a very close relationship with the testers, and I feel that my contributions have made a lasting effect on the final product. I hope to see you all after the retail release!

FASA publishes Shadowrun Vista FAQ

Kimona has posted a lot of new information specific to Shadowrun for Windows Vista over on the official game forums. She covers a lot of bases about playing Shadowrun on a computer. There is also some information for XBOX 360 gamers as well although this is a Vista-specific FAQ. Go over there and give it a read if you are interested in learning more about the differences (and similarities) between PC and XBOX 360 play.

Some new information from the FAQ:

  • dedicated server admins control map and gametype rotation
  • you can view ping times for the servers
  • PC players can play at higher framerates
  • An nVidia 7800 or ATI x1800 video cards are recommended
  • 2GB of RAM is recommended along with a dual core processor
  • Minimum specs: an nVidia 6800 or ATI x800 and P4 3.2 Ghz
  • Same achievements available for both platforms
  • lots of video settings can be tweaked in-game

Finally we have some information about the Vista version of Shadowrun.

FASA Shadowrunning in Redmond

FASA has lost it.  They have taken Shadowrun to the real world.  Lineage and RNA forces have been battling on the Microsoft campus.  SweetLoo just looks scary.  Hmm.  Looks like some beta testers might be hooked up with some sweet swag (minus the Elf ears, I hope).  Be sure to check out the beta tester t-shirt.
Read more about the battle here (with more pics) over on the Shadowrun forums.

IRC Chat with FASA about Shadowrun next Monday

The Shadowrun beta is ending soon.  Fall sends word that FASA is going to host an online IRC chat next Monday (April 30th) on the irc.gamesurge.net network to kind of have one last get-together.  They’ll be taking questions from the gamers about Shadowrun for PC and 360.  They’ll also be giving away prizes to lucky gamers.  See you there.

With the beta coming to an end, we’d like to invite all fans of Shadowrun to join us in one last get together before the beta wraps up.

Join us on IRC chat channel #Shadowrun.FASA on the Gamesurge server from 2-6 PM PDT on Monday, April 30th. We’ll be giving away prizes, answering questions about the game, and chatting with everyone while we play Shadowrun.

See you on Monday!

Framerates NOT locked on Shadowrun PC

Kimona sends word that there is some “serious” misinformation floating out there about the PC version of Shadowrun. So, that IGN report that we reported earlier is in fact not accurate. Offline, she specifically mentioned that the framerates of the PC version of Shadowrun will NOT be locked. This contradicts an earlier report we noticed in the Official XBOX Magazine. I expect to see the PR team release some information about the PC version of the game soon in the coming week or two. More later.

Again, gamers should not be concerned about locked framerates anymore. You can now bet that you will get the extra frames-per-second performance out of your GPU hardware.

Shadowrun beta ends April 30th

Kimona lets us know that the Shadowrun beta for XBOX 360 will end on April 30th.  Many testers have been playing the game since the first of the year.  What will they do with their lives?

I can say that the Shadowrun beta has been the testing experience I’ve had.  FASA has been extremely involved with the beta community.  They’ve given away a lot of prizes.  They’ve named bots after testers.  And I feel that comments that I and the rest of the testers made about the game have influenced it for the better.

So what to play until the launch of Shadowrun (we still don’t have an official release date do we)?

Well, there’s the HALO 3 beta.  Forza 2.  Command and Conquer 3 seems like fun.  A brand new XBOX 360 console is launching next week.  And don’t forget about the Spring Dashboard update that is rolling out in two weeks.

IGN: disappointed in Shadowrun PC

UPDATE:  FASA sends word that something must have gone wrong with this demo.  FASA says that the final build will not work this way and that there is even some misinformation in this review.

Considering there is basically no information about the PC version of Shadowrun, we’ve got to believe IGN’s latest report. As a PC gamer, I’m disappointed along with them. IGN takes a hard look at the PC version of Shadowrun. It appears that not only is the PC aiming system a little handicapped, it also appears that the graphics are sub par as compared to recent video games and even the 360 version of the same game. Whatever the case, their version of Shadowrun PC had lackluster graphics and was extremely taxing on their powerful system.

“The game didn’t look half as good as the 360 version.”

IGN was running the most powerful video card on the market, nVidia’s 8800 GTX and they had a hard time getting 60 frames-per-second. In there words, the framerate was “all over the place” and the game “looked terrible”. We reported earlier that FASA is locking the framerate of the PC version of the game in order to balance the cross-platform play. I can only hope that the final version of the game will be less taxing. A $500 video card ought to be able to run the game better than IGN reports.

IGN also reports that the textures and graphics look better on the XBOX 360 than the PC. Has FASA also locked the texture resolutions as well?

“Textures seemed very low res, which could be a side effect of the higher resolution of the PC version. The lighting appeared as if somebody had lit up each level with bright spotlights, missing the atmospheric shadows of the 360 version.”

IGN tried going into the video settings menu of the game to tweak it. They found very few options.

“Apart from a gamma slider, it was devoid of anything tinker-able. No detail settings, and from memory, we’re pretty sure there wasn’t even an option to set the game’s resolution.”

IGN asks:

“So why did Shadowrun look so terrible, and run so poorly, on Microsoft’s machines?”

We’d like to know also. The XBOX 360 version of this game is getting all of the attention. And the slant is always that XBOX 360 gamers can now hang with the PC gamers. Where is the information on the PC version of this cross-platform game?

Theory: Recently Shadowrun Vista gameplay video on YouTube was removed. Kotaku reported the video in one of their articles. Could that Vista video have NOT been representational of the final graphics and pulled at the request of Microsoft? Is that why Shadowrun for PC was looking bad for IGN…because the graphics aren’t final? I hope so.
I can’t wait to get my hands on the Vista version this game. I’ll certainly do a thorough comparison between both platforms. More later.

Kotaku has had video of Shadowrun being played on Windows Vista. The video is was hosted at YouTube.
It looks like the comments at Kotaku were negative. Why?

Penny Arcade’s take on Shadowrun

Sage sends word that the guys from Penny Arcade were over at FASA this week. The guys wrote about their experiences playing a “very, very complete” version of Shadowrun. Some quotes:

“If you can picture Tribes conglomerated with one part Counter-Strike, adding a round-to-round buy phase but bolstering the mundane options with cyberware and magic, you’re there.”

“I honestly believe that if I were to put a shooter enthusiast in front of this thing, the polish, the loadout options, and the feel of it will get a hook in.”

Check out the rest of the article.

Lisa Hazen talks at IGN about cross-platform testing

Over on the FASA dev blog at IGN, Lisa Hazen gives a report about testing for the PC and XBOX 360 platforms.  Give it a read if you are interested in learning about the challenges of testing this game in a difficult environment (Games for Windows, Windows Vista, cross-platform, different hardware, etc.).
