Sample gameplay video with Vista graphics

Update: Visit this page for more downloads option including QuickTime encoded videos.

This video is hosted by gamingtv.org. It is 5 minutes long at 720×480 resolution. It shows off gameplay and the graphics found in the Windows Vista version of Shadowrun. The players are XBOX 360 players. Please note that the video has been resized and compressed which actually detracts from the wonderful graphics. The video was shot using FRAPS on an nVidia 8800 GTX at max settings.

Sorry. No audio was recorded. (I must say that the audio in the game is really immersive as well).

Download .wmv 180Mb (right-click save as). Thanks to gamingTV.org for hosting.

Update: MLG Gameroom is hosting a scaled down version of the video also. Use the video link ABOVE to download the higher definition video. Else, stream this in your browser:

If you are having trouble signing into Games for Windows - Live, then you might find some help at the Games for Windows support page located at:

http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-us/support/live/Pages/default.aspx

On that page are some troubleshooting tips along with the first update to GfW-Live. You can manually download the update and apply it.

I was experiencing problems autopatching GfW-Live. So, I had to go to that link and manually install the update.

Shadowrun’s theme music performed live by Barbatuques

Baiana is the name of the song by Brazilian group Barbatuques. It’s really cool to see how they perform this song. I think it fits perfectly with Shadowrun.

I meant to post this video a while back.

Really cool performance.

Vista recommended rating of 5.0. Minimum 4.0.

We’ve known for a while that Shadowrun for Vista would have steep requirements. It looks like a 5.0 rating is recommended. Ouch…but it sure looks good.

Dedicated server known issues

From the Shadowrun README.rtf file, here are known issues for the dedicated server:

Dedicated Server Issues
• In the Preferences pane of the Dedicated Server Setup program, some maps are listed twice, both for their native game type (Raid or Extraction) and the Attrition game type.
• Player preferences (set through the in-game preferences interface) are ignored on dedicated servers. Only the dedicated server map/mode cycle, which is set by the server administrator, is honored.
• If a dedicated server loses its connection to the Games for Windows – LIVE service, a message will be sent to the output console stating that the server is disconnecting. The dedicated server will attempt to reconnect every two minutes until reconnection is successful. Due to variances in network topologies, it is possible for players to remain connected to a dedicated server even though the dedicated server loses connection to the Games for Windows – LIVE service. In this case, no new players will be able to join the server through the dedicated server browser, though the game in progress will continue normally.
• Multiplayer achievements are not granted on dedicated servers.
• All text entered through the Dedicated Server Setup program is subject to the Games for Windows – LIVE suitability filter. Profanity or otherwise offensive text will be replaced by blank text. This includes the Message of the Day, the Server Name, and the dedicated server Password boxes.

Multiplayer achievements are not granted on dedicated servers. Wow. I didn’t see that one gaming. I don’t recall — are multiplayer achievements granted in private matches on the XBOX 360?

More on the dedicated server later.

Below is an example of a dedicated server’s .config file as (oddly enough) found in the root directory of the DVD.

I can say that it’s not intuitive on just how to set up a dedicated server on a box at a data center. In fact, I don’t think there are any instructions for it. There are instructions on getting a dedicated server installed on a local machine. But hosting dedicated servers locally is old technology. PC gamers are used to hosting dedicated servers from data centers located around the country.

Regardless, I’m going to have to create an .iso image file of the DVD to run remotely from the data center. I am unaware if my CD key will be invalid on that server. I suspect that it might. Additionally, I am probably doing something illegal by making an .iso version of the game and uploading it to a remote location.

More on the dedicated server issue later.

Shadowrun for Windows Vista screenshots

The graphics in Shadowrun for both XBOX 360 and Windows Vista have gotten a lot better. With all of the particle effects used during gameplay (and there are so many more in the final version) and the new lighting system, the game looks stunning.

I’ve begun taking screenshots of the PC version of Shadowrun. The images were originally captured at 1680 x 1050 with maximum graphical settings. The shots were taken with an nVidia 8800 GTX. I’ve uploaded them to my Flickr account for you to view.

I will be uploading new screenshots throughout the day. So please check back at that URL for new screenshots.

Shadowrun is here

At lunch I swung by my local EB Games and bought Shadowrun for XBOX 360 and Windows Vista. Other retailers already have the game as well. But, don’t assume the game will be available at all retailers. Some still haven’t put the stock out on the shelf. My local Target has space for the game on the shelf, but didn’t have the game in the store yet. So, you might have to call ahead before driving to a store to find Shadowrun.

That said, I’ll be playing Shadowrun all night long. Look for high-definition screenshots from the PC version later tonight. I’ll post my initial impressions soon as well.
